There is no single best month
Uttarakhand runs from river plains below about 700 metres, through hill towns around 1,500 to 2,000 metres, up to Himalayan terrain above 2,500 metres. A month that is perfect in Rishikesh can be impossible at altitude. Pick your season by where you shoot, then protect the schedule with buffers.
- Doon valley, Haridwar, Rishikesh and Ramnagar: the lower valleys and plains
- Mussoorie, Nainital, Almora and Ranikhet: the mid hills
- Auli, Chopta, the Kedarnath region and the Valley of Flowers: the high Himalaya
This guide gives general patterns. Weather changes every year, so we always check current conditions and road status before locking dates.
Season at a glance
| Season | Months | What to expect | Works well for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring | March to April | Mild days, flowering hills, clear light | Lifestyle, ads, music videos |
| Summer | May to mid-June | Hot in the valleys, pleasant in the hills, peak tourist and pilgrim crowds | Hill shoots, early-morning valley shoots |
| Monsoon | Mid-June to September | Heavy rain, landslides, road closures, lush green landscapes | Atmospheric looks, only with buffers built in |
| Autumn | October to mid-November | Clear skies, crisp light, stable weather | Almost everything, so book early |
| Winter | Mid-November to February | Cold, fog on valley mornings, snow at altitude | Snow scenes, cosy interiors, festive looks |
Dehradun, Rishikesh, Haridwar and Ramnagar
- October to March: the most comfortable window for the valleys. Expect clear days, with fog on some winter mornings that can delay starts
- April to June: hot, with strong midday sun. Shoot early and late, and plan shade and hydration for the crew
- July to September: monsoon, with heavy rain, swollen rivers and traffic disruption
Rishikesh and Haridwar also carry pilgrim traffic through much of the Char Dham yatra season, roughly spring to autumn, which affects roads, parking and ghat access. See line production in Rishikesh and Haridwar.
Mussoorie, Nainital and the Kumaon hills
- March to June: pleasant and green, but the busiest tourist period. Mall Road and lake areas are crowded, parking is tight and accommodation fills up
- July to September: monsoon mist and rain create beautiful mood, along with landslide risk and slower roads
- October and November: clear views and crisp light, often the best months for visuals
- December to February: cold, with occasional snowfall in some years. Daylight is short
See line production in Mussoorie and Nainital.
The high Himalaya: Auli, Chopta, Kedarnath and Valley of Flowers
High-altitude locations are the most season-dependent.
- Winter and early spring: heavy snow in places such as Auli and Chopta, which is perfect for snow scenes but can limit roads and daylight
- Late spring to early summer: snow melts and trekking routes open, with cool, clear weather at altitude
- Monsoon: very high rainfall and landslide risk. The Valley of Flowers is at its most vivid in the monsoon and early autumn window, but access is controlled and needs permits
High-altitude shoots need extra planning for access, acclimatisation, safety, permissions and gear. Start early and keep generous buffers.
Planning a shoot around the monsoon
If your dates fall in the monsoon, you can still shoot well if you plan for it:
- Keep buffer days in the schedule, and avoid back-to-back remote locations
- Choose a covered or interior backup for every outdoor day
- Check road status daily, since landslides can close hill roads for hours or days
- Protect cameras, lenses, audio and power with rain covers and dry storage
- Keep call times flexible so you can use the best weather windows
- Confirm insurance cover for weather delays before the shoot
The crowd calendar
Weather is only half of it. Crowds change what is practical.
- May and June school holidays: peak tourist weeks in Mussoorie and Nainital
- Char Dham yatra season: heavy pilgrim traffic on roads and in towns such as Rishikesh and Haridwar
- Kanwar Yatra, usually in July or August: major traffic restrictions and diversions around Haridwar and Rishikesh
- Diwali and winter holidays: a second tourist peak across the hills
We plan call times, locations and vehicles around these peaks, and we pick quieter alternatives where the crowd would damage the shot.
How a line producer manages weather and season risk
The best schedules are built with seasonal risk in mind from the first draft. We check conditions and road status as your dates approach, plan backup locations for every outdoor day, and adjust the schedule day by day while keeping permissions aligned. Tell us your dates and locations and we will tell you honestly what the season will do to them. See the full line production guide for Uttarakhand.
