Why film in Nainital
Nainital is the best-known lake town of Kumaon, built around the crescent-shaped Naini Lake at roughly 2,000 metres. Within a short drive you get colonial-era architecture, pine and oak forest, a busy Mall Road, quieter lakes at Bhimtal and Sattal, and Himalayan viewpoints at Mukteshwar and Ranikhet. For a production, that means many different looks inside a compact area.
- Lake, boats and mist for romance, music videos and brand films
- Heritage buildings and hill-station streets for period and travel content
- Forest roads and orchards for ads and lifestyle shoots
- A quick contrast with the plains, with Kathgodam and Haldwani in the foothills below
What line production in Nainital covers
Paavi Films plans and runs the ground side of your shoot so the director can direct. For Nainital and Kumaon that typically includes:
- Location scouting and recces around Nainital, Bhimtal, Sattal and Mukteshwar
- Film shooting permissions and local approvals
- Crew, fixers, vehicles and equipment sourced locally
- Stay, meals and transport for the unit, planned around peak-season crowds
- Daily call sheets, safety and coordination on set
- Wrap, cost report and footage handover

Locations we plan around in and near Nainital
Naini Lake and Mall Road
The lake and the Mall Road promenade are the postcard look, and also the busiest places in town. Public areas, boats and the lakefront each have their own rules, so we plan for early mornings and confirm what is allowed before the crew arrives.
Bhimtal and Sattal
Quieter lakes with less crowd pressure, good for slower scenes, music videos and brand films, with easier parking and more privacy than the town centre.
Mukteshwar, Ranikhet and Almora
Higher and cooler Kumaon locations with orchards, ridge-line views and small-town streets. Drives are longer, so schedules need buffer time.
Permissions for shooting in Nainital
Film shooting in Uttarakhand starts with the state single-window system. A Shooting Permission Certificate is applied for online by the film producer or an authorised line producer, and the certificate is shared with the departments concerned. Our guide to film shooting permissions in Uttarakhand explains the full route.
In Nainital the state certificate is usually only the first step. Depending on where you shoot, you may also need local clearances for:
- Public areas such as Mall Road, the lakefront and busy tourist streets, through the local administration and police
- Forest and protected areas, which fall under the forest department; see forest filming permission in Uttarakhand
- Heritage buildings, private estates and resorts, which need written consent from the owner or manager
Getting a unit to Nainital
Nainital is roughly 300 km from Delhi, about six to eight hours by road depending on traffic. The nearest railhead is Kathgodam and the nearest airport is Pantnagar, both in the plains below the hills, with Haldwani as the usual gateway town for vehicles, equipment and vendors.
Things that decide a Nainital schedule:
- Narrow hill roads and limited parking, which cap the size of vehicles and generators you can bring to some locations
- Tourist traffic, which can slow the final stretch into town in peak weeks
- Accommodation for larger units, which often has to be split across Nainital, Bhimtal and Haldwani
- Weather, which can change a lakeside morning within hours
We build the transport, stay and meals plan around these limits instead of discovering them on shoot day.
Best time to shoot in Nainital
- March to June: pleasant and green, but the busiest tourist period, so crowds and traffic need planning
- July to September: monsoon. Heavy rain and landslides can close roads, so keep buffer days or avoid fixed dates
- October and November: clear skies and crisp light, often the best months for visuals
- December to February: cold, with occasional snow on higher ridges and short daylight hours

How a Nainital shoot runs with us
We start with a short brief and a recce, build the schedule, permissions and budget around the real locations, then run the shoot day by day with daily reports.
