Why film around Jim Corbett
Jim Corbett National Park, near Ramnagar in the Nainital district, is Indiaโs oldest national park, established in 1936, and a tiger reserve. Around it you find sal forest, grassland, the Kosi river, hill ridges and a long line of resorts and farm stays. It is a natural choice for wildlife and nature documentaries, adventure and travel films, brand films and fiction set in forest and rural landscapes.
- Dense forest edge, rivers and open grassland within a short drive of each other
- Resorts that can host a whole unit in one place
- A reliable road and rail route from Delhi and the plains
- Strong contrast with hill locations such as Nainital an hour or two away
What is and is not possible in the park
We plan every Corbett shoot in three layers so there is always a workable option:
- Inside protected zones: forest department approval, set fees and conditions, limits on crew size, vehicles, lighting, drones and timings
- On the park edge and buffer areas: easier to access, but still needs forest and local permissions
- Outside the park: riverbanks, farmland, resorts, temples and roads that can look just like Corbett with far fewer restrictions
Read our guide to forest filming permission in Uttarakhand for how the forest route works.
Permissions for shooting near Jim Corbett
Every film shoot in Uttarakhand starts with the state single-window system, where a Shooting Permission Certificate is applied for online by the producer or an authorised line producer. See film shooting permissions in Uttarakhand for the full route.
Around Corbett you should expect to plan for:
- Forest department permission for any filming in forest, park or protected land
- Written consent from resort owners, farm stays and private landowners
- Local administration and police clearance for roads, public places and crowd scenes
- Drone rules, which are strict across India and especially near protected areas
We confirm the right route for your exact locations and dates before you commit to a schedule.
Locations around Ramnagar
The Kosi river and riverside resorts
Wide riverbeds, boulders and forest backdrops with easy road access. Good for adventure, brand films and fiction, and usually simpler to permit than the park itself.
Garjia, Kaladhungi and Corbett Falls
Garjia Devi temple on the Kosi, the village of Kaladhungi with its Corbett heritage, and the nearby waterfall give a mix of cultural, heritage and nature settings.
Safari zones such as Bijrani, Jhirna and Dhikala
The classic Corbett look, but inside the park. Access depends on forest department permission, zone rules and season, so we always plan a backup outside the park.
Logistics: getting a unit to Corbett
Ramnagar is roughly 250 km from Delhi, about five to six hours by road, and has its own railway station. Pantnagar is the nearest airport. Many resorts around Ramnagar can house a full unit, which makes base camp planning simpler than in hill towns.
What to plan for:
- Patchy mobile coverage in forest areas, so we agree radio and communication plans in advance
- Early starts for forest light, with strict timing rules inside the park
- Vehicle restrictions in sensitive areas, which limit equipment and generator choices
- Safety around wildlife, with trained local guides and naturalists where needed
Best time to shoot near Corbett
- Mid-November to mid-June: the main window. Most core safari zones are open, with winter mornings often foggy and the hot dry months offering strong wildlife activity
- Monsoon, roughly mid-June to mid-November: core zones usually close and rivers rise, so plan for locations outside the park and keep buffer days
Zone dates change each year, so we confirm them at planning stage. Our shooting season guide for Uttarakhand covers the rest of the state.
A word on wildlife shoots
Wildlife is never guaranteed, and responsible productions never bait, chase or disturb animals. We build wildlife schedules with generous buffers, work with trained naturalists and follow forest department rules at all times. If your story needs a particular animal on a particular day, we will tell you plainly what is realistic.
